about behindthewindow.de
|
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

behindthewindow.de is a shop window in the Munich district of Westend – and, at the same time, a platform for international information. Acting as a kind of membrane, the project links the realities of street-life to virtual space. It provides insights and views: into the seemingly borderless cosmos of global news being transmitted from the small monitor; into the concrete work taking place in the room behind the shop window; and into an artistic process.
behindthewindow.de is the idea of Erich Gantzert-Castrillo. It turns an otherwise inconspicuous shop window into an instrument of communication between different worlds of information that are normally perceived as separate and independent of one another. The little patch of grass on the windowsill reminds the onlooker that media consumers always have to rely on their own, immediate – and frequently physical – experience in order to understand what they see and hear. The glass surfaces touching one other serve to expose the construed and fragile nature of the levels of information being broadcast. They require an aware and alert audience capable of establishing linkages and so making them comprehensible. In that sense behindthewindow.de can be understood as the earthing of complex and immaterial impressions. The conceptual component of behindthewindow.de is a mural painting by Günther Förg. Two intensive, luminously orange and green fields of colour generate creative tension within the room and – thanks to the impact of their shop-front-like appearance and extrovert image – produce an interplay between the interior and exterior.
behindthewindow.de also refers to the internet project artemak.de – an archive of techniques and work materials employed by contemporary artists. Erich Gantzert-Castrillo founded it in 1974 and manages it together with Elisabeth Bushart. „artemak“ also shows us that art is constantly earthed. It is never created autonomously. Instead, it is always based on what the artist experiences in his/her individual environment. artemak establishes a forum for conversations and discussions with contemporary artists about the way they think and work. It demonstrates that art and everyday life are not opposed to each other. artemak.de is a non-commercial, information portal which is available to anyone interested. You can visit artemak.de from summer 2011 onwards.
